Microsoft has been using (and referencing) Windows 8 new UI as “Metro” to describe the new geometric, typography-influenced look-and-feel, which ultimately is being spread across the company’s entire range of products, being first showcased with Windows Phone.
We have used ‘Metro style’ as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names.
That’s bullshit. Metro might be a code name for product development, but it’s catching and powerful and, possibly, Microsoft’s finest attempt to created a fresh brand.
But now, it comes to my attention that several outlets are reporting that Microsoft has been threatened with legal action for infringing on “Metro” trademarks held by German retailer Metro AG.
And, the new adopted terminology is “Windows 8-style UI”, which is waaaaay better than Metro. Not.
